Slangetuin - A Serpent-Free Sanctuary

Nestled beside the Helderberg Nature Reserve in Somerset West lies a garden once known for its frequent snake visitors, aptly dubbed "die slangetuin" or "the snake garden." Given its proximity to a successful bed and breakfast, the clients sought a solution to repel the copious amounts of snakes, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for guests.

Slangetuin Garden

In response to this unique challenge, I envisioned a transformative landscape design that would not only address the snake issue but also enhance the garden's aesthetic and functional appeal. Here's how we brought this vision to life:

Opening Up Spaces:

To deter snakes, we began by opening up large areas of the garden, replacing dense undergrowth with expansive lawns and chipstone. This approach not only reduced the potential hiding spots for snakes but also created a more inviting and open space for guests to enjoy.

Creating Wide, Welcoming Paths:

Wide, paths were introduced through a newly planted fynbos section, allowing guests to explore the garden safely and comfortably. The fynbos, a distinctive feature of the region's flora, adds a touch of local charm and biodiversity to the garden.

A Shaded Sanctuary:

Under the canopy of ancient trees, we created a tranquil room filled with Azaleas and Camelias. These flowering plants thrive in the shaded conditions, providing a burst of color and a serene spot for guests to relax. The shade section enhances the garden's layered visual interest.

Strategic Use of Snake-Repellent Plants:

Central to the garden's redesign was the strategic use of plants known for their snake-repelling properties. We integrated Artemisia, Tulbaghia, and Pelargonium throughout the garden. Additionally, we repurposed a significant amount of Agapanthus from the original planting scheme. These plants were artfully arranged to border the rockery and other beds surrounding the house, creating a natural barrier against snakes.

Since the implementation of this thoughtful design, not a single snake has been spotted in the garden, proving the effectiveness of our plant selection and layout. The garden now stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of aesthetic beauty and practical function, offering guests a safe and enchanting space to enjoy during their stay.
